AM Skincare Routine for repairing your skin's natural barrier
A damaged barrier can be the result of an endless number of things including your skincare routine đ
Youâll know itâs damaged because itâll feel itchy and tight. Youâll get breakouts and peeling. Youâll start buying acne gels and oil-free lotions. But none of that will work. It will only make it worse.
Put down the Simple products and let me help youâŚ
𧟠1. CLEANSER đ§ź
No scrubs. In every sense. Your barriers damaged and it doesnât need any more stress. Choose gentle products. Donât wash your face in the shower, the waterâs far too hot and runs the risk of drying your skin even out even more.
đŚ 2. TONER đŚ
Itâs best to err on the side of caution if you arenât sure, put down the AHA toner. Stick with hydrating mists to sandwich in moisture. Look for ingredients like glycerine, amino acids and sodium PCA.
đ§đżââď¸ 3. SERUM đ§đżââď¸
Again, weâre avoiding active ingredients. Your skin isnât able to protect itself & retain moisture, so you have to slather it in humectants, hope and prayers. Hyaluronic acid will plump and hydrate, mix it with a low percentage of polyglutamic acid and youâll be a grape in no time đ
𧴠4. MOISTURISER đ§´
No active ingredients means no âanti-ageingâ and no âbrighteningâ. Your skins dehydrated, those lines arenât wrinkles theyâre scorched earth. Look for products containing ceramides and fatty acids.
âď¸ 5. OCCLUSIVE âď¸
Youâve damaged your barrier hun, you need to fake a new one. This might be more steps than youâre used to but unless you want to age like milk, you must follow them. An occlusive is a product that is usually oil or petroleum-based. Theyâll form a snug blanket over your humectants, trapping moisture in your skin. Itâll also prevent moisture from getting in your skin, so make sure itâs your last step before...
âď¸ 6. SPF âď¸
Sun damage is the biggest cause of a damaged barrier. It creates pigmentation, cancers, premature ageing, racism (probably). Wear SPF otherwise all your hard work will be wasted. Yes, even if youâre staying inside. Yes, even if youâre Black.
Look after your skin and it will look after you. Mistreat your skin, and it will peel off in unsightly layers đ
